Pi Gamma Mu Scholarships

If you are a member of Pi Gamma Mu, you could qualify to be the recipient of a $2000 or $1000 award to attend graduate school.  Pi Gamma Mu awards up to 10 scholarships each year.  Why not be one of the next recipients?

Scholarships are awarded only to Pi Gamma Mu members.  Eligibility is for up to four years from initiation into Pi Gamma Mu.  Scholarships are intended for the first or second year of graduate work in a student's first graduate degree program in the following areas of study:  sociology, anthropology, political science, history, economics, international relations, public administration, criminal justice, law, social work, cultural geography or psychology.  Business Administration is specifically excluded from consideration.  Other interdisciplinary fields will be considered on an individual basis based upon the degree to which the social sciences are an integral component of the overall course of study.  In such cases, applicants should submit a program description outlining requirements and coursework.

No more than three scholarships will be given annually in any one graduate field.  The statement of purpose (i.e., Why do I want to pursue graduate studies in the social sciences?) is quite important.  It should include information about the applicant's commitment to the social sciences, be typed, and have a professional appearance. Winners will be notified in late spring, with the grants awarded in the fall.  Only complete applications will be considered for awards.  Previous recipients of Pi Gamma Mu scholarships are not eligible to apply again.

All scholarship applications must contain the following components:

  • Application form (click here to print the form).
  • Personal statement.
  • Resume
  • At least three letters of recommendation from individuals qualified to assess the applicant's academic merit.  Recommendation letters should include the letter writer's signature across the seal of the envelope and should be included in your packet with the application materials listed above.  Recommendation letters should specifically address the student's merit related to his/her Pi Gamma Mu scholarship application, intellectual qualities, and his/her chance for success in graduate school rather than a generic letters recommending acceptance into a graduate program or other general recommendations.
  • Official transcripts from all institutions of higher learning attended.  Transcripts should be official and include the school's stamp or seal.  If you are unable to include official transcripts in your packet along with your other application materials, the school can mail them directly to the Pi Gamma Mu international office by the application deadline of February 15.

All items (other than school transcripts) should be sent in one large envelope to the international office.  Applications must be postmarked by February 15 and mailed to the Pi Gamma Mu international office in Winfield, Kansas:
